Jason T. Brooks mug shot

In the great tradition of Mr. Ponzi and Mr. Madoff, here comes another son of a gun. This time it is a 30 year old Jason Brooks of Erie, CO and his partner in suspected crime Donald S. Carew that got indicted. These guys apparently defrauded investors in 15 states, telling them that they could take part in an electronics resale business. For almost three years, Brooks told investors that he would use their money to purchase electronics and appliances via Genius, Inc. from a Japanese firm and resell them at significantly higher prices. Instead, he used investors money to pay “interest payments” to other investors and for personal expenses, including gambling, according to the indictment.

Attorney General Announces Securities Fraud And Theft Indictment In Multimillion-Dollar, Multistate Ponzi Scheme
6/2/2009

DENVER — Colorado Attorney General John Suthers announced today the Statewide Grand Jury has indicted Jason T. Brooks (DOB: 5/24/1979) on 24 counts of securities fraud and theft and Donald S. Carew (DOB: 3/30/1972) on three counts of securities fraud for their parts in a multistate Ponzi scheme.

“These get-rich-quick schemes are especially insidious during these tough economic times,” Suthers said. “I would encourage Coloradans to be cautious of any investment opportunity that promises unusually high rates of return. If an investment opportunity sounds too good to be true, it probably is.”

According to the indictment, Brooks solicited and accepted more than $10 million from investors in Boulder, Broomfield, Larimer and Weld counties to take part in an electronics resale business. Between June 2005 and February 2008, Brooks told investors he, via Genius, Inc., would use their money to underwrite his business with a Japanese firm to purchase electronics and appliances and resell them at significantly higher prices. Brooks, according to the indictment, used investors money to pay “interest payments” to other investors and for personal expenses, including gambling.

Brooks’ Ponzi scheme, according to the indictment, extended beyond Colorado to victims residing in 15 other states and U.S. territories, including Arizona, New Mexico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

During the course of the Ponzi scheme, Brooks enlisted the help of others, including Carew, to act as representatives of Genius, Inc., and a second related company, Genius Deals, Inc. Both men are suspected of making false statements to prospective investors about the nature, terms and risks of their investments.

Attorneys from the Office of the Attorney General will prosecute Brooks and Carew in Weld County District Court.

Does anyone know exactly what tipped this guy off to the authorities. I have done a lot of research on this guy and nowhere does it say what actually led the authorities to get wind of this guy's scam.

I am writing a book on investment on fraud and could use the help on how this guy got caught.

Please email me if you know richlee7@yahoo.com

I got this notification on Jason Brooks from vinelink.com. Is he out on bail? Did he reach a plea agreement? I'd be very disappointed if he only rotted in jail for 5 months!

I do not know anything more about Jason Brooks than what was mentioned in the Colorado Attorney General's news release that I re-posted. I did not write any articles about him and have nothing further to add on the subject.

Please remove the comments posted that make outrageous accusations to victims of the scam. Thank you.

I do not know who made the comments, which you claim to be "outrageous" and have no way to verify either the identity of the poster, or the validity of the information posted. The best way to repudiate a comment, which you believe to be untrue, is to post a factual reply that contradicts it.

Jake,
To make the statement that the best way to "repudiate a comment...is to post a factual reply that contradicts it." is false. How does one defend their personal character against libelous comments? To assume one can defend their character with a factual comment to refute a post full of lies is ridiculous.

Jake, show some character and take some accountability for what you allow to be posted on your website. The right thing to do is to take down the comments about innocent people who were victims in this situation. If you need facts in order to do this, then I will send you a copy of the indictment myself which shows only Jason Brooks and Scott Carew were charged with any crime.

"Science may have found a cure for most evils, but it has found no remedy for the worst of them all-the apathy of human beings."
-Helen Keller

It is really easy to accuse someone of wrongdoing. It is more difficult to keep cool in responding to accusations. Responding with facts is not only what I would do, it is what I have done. Facts that discredit the accuser can clear the name of the accused.

Whoever has made this comment about Corey, Nate, John, Kevin and Rob is full of shit and obviously doesn't know squat. HJ Sundays? Someone making something up due to jealousy it sounds like. Get your facts straight and call each of them and ask permission to use their name? I'm all for free speach but to slander innocent people is wrong. This person is just as evil as Jason Brooks by commenting on something they know nothing about. Call them all and come clean with who you are.

Jason T. Brooks and Donald Scott Carew Colorado state grand jury indictment.

Why are some of these people pretending to be victims and trying to keep the truth from getting out. What are they trying to hide?

“…Throughout the course of the enterprise, the indictment reads, Brooks recruited several “associates,” including Carew, who acted as representatives of Genius Inc. in helping to solicit funding… made “material, untrue statements and omissions” to investors about the risks involved in the scheme. Brooks and his agents allegedly solicited investments from individuals and entities ranging from $5,000 to $1 million.”

The real story is why aren't Jason Brooks other accomplices John McCaskill, Nate Whitney and Corey Weigand being charged? They are not victims, and nobody feels sorry for them. Supposedly they founded the scam with Jason Brooks and Donald Scott Carew. Nate Whitney is saying Weigand even worked for Scott at a fitness club in Boulder called Mountains Edge when they started this whole thing. It looks like they all knew from the start what the truth was because these guys started it together, then they roped everyone else in with lies, then they spent all the money TOGETHER. According to the indictment John McCaskill and Nate Whitney never even had any of their own money or their families' money “invested”. They scammed other people and used their money instead. How suspicious? Now they lie and put all the blame on Jason and Carew and Weigand. They're all guilty and trying to save themselves by playing dumb. These liars knew everything from the start!

It is a well known fact, they ALL spent the investors money on “personal expenses”. Jason Brooks is hardly alone in that. Why are they lying and saying it was only Brooks. The reporter should have pointed out this suspicious key piece of the puzzle and named John McCaskill, Nate Whitney, Corey Weigand, Robert Bell and Kevin Wendling and their cronies who are all named in the indictment. Why are these COWARDS hiding? Because they ALL blew the investors money on flights and hotels, gambling and clubbing in Vegas, Denver, Florida, the Ozarks and the Virgin Islands. They even had HJ Sundays at Jason’s house. To this day Nate Whitney brags to everyone how every week they watched football and went in rooms where investors money was spent on prostitutes. Nate says rat faced Robert Bell came out all hyper yelling “Happy ending! Happy ending!” Remember our high school reunion? ALL of them acted like spoiled little girls thinking they were better than everyone else. Especially Nate: “I’m better than you, I’m a genius, Jason's making $12 million a month.” Whitney, and Robert: “I’m rich, look I’m desperate for attention, watch me dance like Michael Jackson.” Bell and Kevin (“if you were as smart as me you would have given all your money to Jason”) Wendling. Funny that Wendling told me that Nate said my wife needed to “get a REAL job.” At least she isn't a broke, bald, self glorified bellhop like Nate Whitney. What a joke LMAO HAHA! These greedy criminals were always putting everyone else down and still are. We say, "send them all to jail!"

The funniest thing is out of all of them Corey Weigand will probably go to jail with Brooks. Because he's too stupid to realize what Nate Whitney and John McCaskill are getting everyone to say behind his back. Now Nate and John are calling everyone, and probably the investigators and telling them that Weigand was the mastermind with Jason of the whole thing up until the two had a falling out in 2006. And Corey lied to convince Nate, John, Kevin Wendling and Robert Bell to join in on the plan. Nate is telling everyone that their biggest mistake was trusting Corey. Looks like Weigand is Nate and McCaskills follower and too weak to tell people and the authorities the truth about those guys. Wake up. They're smiling in your face and putting all the blame on you, behind your back, just like they did to Carew. Don’t drop the soap. HAHA!
