The daisies are a bit of a problem - they attract lots of aphids that feed on their flower heads. I actually had to deadhead the ones growing on the south side of the house (complete with most of the aphids) a couple of weeks ago and sprinkle some permethrin 0.25% fine powder on top of what was left. The daisies didn't seem to mind too much and came right back. Proof is in the picture (Mexican Hats and Yarrow in the background) taken yesterday evening of this "southerner" that went into bloom before any of the same daisies planted with northern exposure.

Even though the "northerners" also had some aphids on them, that infestation was not nearly as bad and I just let the ladybugs take care of it. With my ladybug population growing, they had no problem taking care of the problem. Ladybugs (Latin name - Coccinellidae) are also known as Ladybirds, Lady Beetles, Ladyclocks, Lady Cows (no wonder my not quite one-and-a-half year old says "moo" every time she sees one), Lady Flies and Scarlets. An adult ladybug can consume over 4,000 aphids in its adult lifetime. And that's on top of the over 500 they consume in the larval stage. I say, "guard your lady bugs and they will guard your garden!"

The Calendula (aka Pot Marigold or Scotch Marigold, Latin name - Calendula Officinalis) flower you see in the picture (also taken yesterday) and growing on the north side of the house is flowering a bit early this year. It must have been sheltered quite well by the taller plants around it, as none of the Pot Marigolds south of the house are anywhere near ready to bloom.

Did you know that Calendula doesn't just look awesome in your garden, but is also a medicinal plant, among other things, used to treat various ulcers and skin disorders? And its leaves and petals are also edible! The petals can be added to dishes as a garnish and in lieu of saffron! I absolutely love these flowers and they are easy to get started from seed. Unlike my daisies, Pot Marigolds are annuals, but they will grow in almost any soil and will reseed themselves from year to year.

Lastly, we have Primrose (picture taken on June 14th, 2009). This flower is another perennial growing with southern exposure, if you can call it that, as it is growing in the shade from the thick growth of multicolored Bachelor Buttons (Centaurea Cyanus, aka Common Cornflower, Bluebottle, Boutonniere Flower, Hurtsickle) towering well above it. This is the first year that it bloomed - gorgeous!

On a funnier note, I could just swear that I had sewn some beets in my "greenhouse" early this spring. The sprouts didn't much look like beets to me, but I figured it was just my frail memory playing tricks on me. So, I transplanted the "beets" in late spring as planned into my new vegetable garden, because the old one got overrun by flowers and rabbits. Well, it looks like my beets weren't beets after all, as they look suspiciously like Primrose! Another vegetable garden destined to become a flower bed?...
