Jewish Russian American Steve Zilberman - Dies an American Hero
Pilot Lt. Miroslav "Steve" Zilberman was born in Kiev, Ukraine. Moved with his parents to Columbus, OH, when he was in the sixth grade. Joined US Navy to pay for college.
Miroslav died on March 31, 2010 in the North Arabian Sea at the age of 31. His E-2C Hawkeye plane's engine failed as he was returning from a mission in Afghanistan. He saved his entire crew, but was not able to save himself. His call sign was Abrek, just like one of the first two Soviet space monkeys.
Zilberman is survived by his wife, Katrina; son, Daniel, 4; and daughter, Sarah, 2, of Virginia Beach; and his parents, Boris and Anna Zilberman of Columbus, Ohio.
Donations for the sole purpose of Daniel and Sarah's future college expenses can be made through the VAW/VRC Memorial Fund. More details on them can be found here. (It's bad enough that their father had to die to pay for his college education.)
A very nice article about Slavik, with many more details about his life and his heroic death is here.
P.S. Eugene Voskoboynikov led me to this info - thanks!

That is too sad. I lost my
That is too sad. I lost my cousin of around the same age in a similar manner. His helicopter malfunctioned near his base in Alaska. Unlike this hero, no one survived the crash, but it is still so sad to lose American citizens in this manner. Condolences to his family.
