In today's plumbing series tutorial, I show you how to replace a whole house water sediment filter. The same procedure can be used to replace other water filters in whole house, under the sink and other single and multistage applications, as long as they use similar looking filtration canisters.

Filters should be replaced as specified by their manufacturer, but always at least once every 3 to 6 months, depending on water usage and your specific application. I use a 1 micron ribbed polypropylene (PP) sediment filter in this tutorial and you can use any other filter type designed for your application.

I never use pleated paper filters for any water filtration application - they tend to rot and cause more problems than they cure, especially if you do not replace them very often.
